I cannot write without music. It’s my vaccine for writer’s block. Here’s my incredibly pretentious way of expressing this — If my mind is a projector that allows me to picture a nonexistent film, music is the light bulb. Before I started Lily & Kat, I heard “At Home” by the Crystal Fighters. It’s an irresistibly sweet electronic pop song and upon hearing it I was able to imagine Lily & Kat as a finished work. All the emotional beats were there. The childish innocence of the friendship, the helpless longing. This five minute song let me see an eighty-five minute film.
